A Yankee In King Arthurs Court
2022 - ongoing...
"A Yankee in King Arthur's Court" is a project inspired
by the novel by Mark Twain, where he narrates the story of a mechanic who, upon
hitting his head, becomes concussed and is transported to Camelot during the
time of King Arthur's reign.
Camelot, defined as a place of an idyllic atmosphere, acts as the in-between
space that one inhabits in moments of non-consciousness. It is easier to
imagine an idealized reality in a non-waking moment. The Yankee, now in King
Arthur's court, compares his current life situation with his regular day-to-day
life and wonders how they could be considered so differently.
The traditions have remained the same for hundreds of years, instilling an
iron-clad pride among all classes of wealth. In this story, the Yankee begins
to reflect on his life in New York and reveals the similar intricacies within
the frameworks of both societies. “I want to be a part of it, New York, New
York,” sings Frank Sinatra. In some sense, New York is Camelot for Frank.
Reflecting upon Camelot is less of a place and more of a feeling. It is a
symbol for living in bliss and keeping the horrors of the world at bay.
Camelot is a place that is eternally protected, and only lucky ones are granted
access. One could never imagine a place like Camelot to exist when your reality
could not be further from this concept of eternal pleasure.
